Hayley Mary announces sophomore EP ‘The Drip’

I OH YOU are psyched to announce Melbourne alt-rocker Hayley Mary’s sophomore EP The Drip will be released on Friday 18 June. This exciting announcement comes along with the third cut from the EP, the soaring ballad ‘Young & Stupid’ released today alongside a stunning video directed by Michael Ridley.
Showcasing a crushing gentleness to Hayley’s commanding voice, ‘Young & Stupid’ is an emotionally charged ballad that was inspired by the unfamiliar sound of a landline ringing, on a recent visit to Hayley’s partner’s family home. She reflects:
“I hadn’t realised they even had a landline. It was like a ghost calling through the hallway with that old school ring. ‘Who the hell even calls you on that?’ I asked. ‘Only Nana,’ my partner replied. As it was in the middle of the worst part of covid, there was a certain vibe around; of everything that had been taken for granted; of the preciousness of life and the fragility of the old, mixed with a pronounced concern with where technology was going to take us. We reflected on the probability that when the last landlines in the world stopped ringing it would only be because a certain generation was gone.”

Hayley Mary’s forthcoming sophomore EP The Drip explodes with newfound exhilaration and energy and thematically, is about Hayley finally finding her place in the world. Where her 2020 debut EP The Piss, The Perfume explored feelings of conflict and uncertainty, The Drip is the sound of a woman who knows exactly who she is and what she wants to say. Musically, it taps into the UK’s longstanding love affair with ’60s guitar pop – a lineage from the Beatles to the Libertines and beyond, but there are also the genres she grew up hearing her musician dad playing: UK punk, Celtic melodies, Northern soul. Some tracks are co-writes with her boyfriend Johnny Took, who also co-produced the EP along with Scott Horscroft.‘Young & Stupid’ follows previous singles ‘The Chain’ and ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’– Hayley’s first music since The Piss, The Perfume was released to critical acclaim last year. Together these singles have seen support from The Line of Best Fit, Paste, Idolator, NME, Gigwise, The Burning Ear, XS Noise and The Independent along with adds to triple j, Double J, Kink FM (Netherlands) and spins across Amazing Radio (UK) and XS Manchester. Hayley famously performed Lana Del Rey’s ‘Chemtrails Over The Country Club’ on triple j’s Like A Version earlier this year.

‘Young and Stupid’ is an example of Hayley Mary’s world-class storytelling and a song made to be sung live. Alongside six other energetic tracks, ‘Young & Stupid’ will appear on Hayley Mary’s second EP The Drip – out Friday 18 June.
