Alice, drummer and co-vocalist of Canberra punk band Box Dye, recently spoke with James on Local Lunch about the band’s roots, their DIY punk vibe, and their biggest gig yet opening for Aussie rock icons Spiderbait.
Alice and co-vocalist Mel bonded over box-dyeing their hair as a rebellious form of self-expression, a ritual that inspired the band’s name. When a drummer proved hard to find, Alice taught herself the drums, combining vocals and drumming in a style she was inspired to try by Spiderbait’s own Kram. James and Alice discuss the band’s collaborative songwriting process that combines Alice’s lyrics and Mel’s riffs, with bassist Miles tying it all together.
The band plans to break from their typical one-single-a-year trend with more music on the horizon. But for now, fans can catch Box Dye live this Friday at the UC Refectory alongside Adalita and Spiderbait.
