This presentation will explore the initial rise of virtual reality storytelling. It will discuss the technology, the ethical dimensions it presents, and the challenges faced over the past 5 years. It will then explore the Expanded Storytelling Lab at University of South Australia and its development of immersive journalism grammar and the framework established to teach this to students without them needing specialist skills. Finally, it will look at the latest research with augmented reality and how to find meaningful stories while using these technologies.

Bio
Dr Ben Stubbs is a senior lecturer in journalism and creative writing at the University of South Australia. He has written features and literary journalism for the New York Times, The Guardian, the Toronto Star and many others. Ben’s longform non-fiction is published in Meanjin, Griffith Review, Southerly and Inside Story. He has written five books exploring travel writing and the boundaries of non-fiction. He is on the executive committee of the Australasian Association of Writing Programs (AAWP) and is the special issues editor of TEXT journal.
