While jazz might not be the first genre that comes to mind when thinking of Canberra’s music scene, the Canberra Jazz Club is keeping the rhythm alive. Established in 1972, the club brings live jazz performances to the local community every month, attracting both longtime fans and curious newcomers. With 220 members and regular Sunday afternoon concerts at the Southern Cross Club in Jamison, the club celebrates traditional jazz—from New Orleans-style Dixieland to lively swing bands. According to club secretary Linda Weiss, Canberra audiences are known for their appreciation of quality music, making it a favourite stop for top-tier musicians.

Membership is open to all, with discounted rates for students and an easy sign-up process online. Each event features professional jazz bands rather than jam sessions, and performances are often complemented by dancing from local swing groups. Their next event on August 10 features Robbie Mann, a rising stride pianist and local talent, promising another crowd-pleasing afternoon. With affordable access and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, the Canberra Jazz Club is a hidden gem for music lovers across all generations.
