Arithmoquine is the newest band to hit Canberra’s music scene, blending alternative rock with a quirky mix of instruments including trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone. Formed by students from ANU’s residence halls, the band draws inspiration from a wide range of genres, from Irish folk to musical theatre, and even takes its name from a philosophical paradox in Douglas Hofstadter’s Gödel, Escher, Bach. Their debut gig at Smith’s Alternative featured covers of Taylor Swift and Tears for Fears alongside original tracks like “Proud,” written about the ACT. With a growing Instagram following and plans to join the Feedback Festival, Arithmoquine is embracing experimentation, collaboration, and a whole lot of fun as they carve out their unique sound in the local music scene.
