From scribbling sudden ideas on parking tickets to crafting a published collection, UC creative writing teacher and PhD candidate Andrew Moss joined The Wrap to unpack the beautifully messy process behind his new poetry book Hybrid Heaven and Other Poems and also treated us to a reading of a poem inspired by none also than Canberra’s own Genesis Owusu!

Drawing on lived experiences across Ghana, the UK, Japan and Australia, Andrew describes his work as a reflection of “planetary humanism”, an exploration of connection across cultures and everyday encounters.

His approach to writing is both spontaneous and deeply reflective, admitting that a poem might begin in a flash of inspiration before months of refinement.

As both teacher and student, Andrew embraces the evolving nature of creativity, noting that “teaching is to kind of learn twice,” while championing poetry as a playful, musical and accessible form of expression.
